You are not going to believe how this shiny DIY ball was made

In the category of most awesomely useless item on record, we bring you a marvel that’s been all the rage in Japan this year—polishing tin foil into revolutionary perfection. Hundreds of memes have been floating around for months, but this is one of our favorite DIY example.

Why do we love these so much? Maybe it’s because they bear a striking resemblance to the chrome steel bearing balls that Hamilton installs in all our swivel raceways and wheel bearings.

The incredible metamorphosis actually takes its cue from time-honored metalworking techniques commonly used in Japan for constructing certain types of traditional steel samurai swords. When working with imperfect steel, Japanese swordsmiths practice “kitae,” in which they repeatedly hammer metal and fold it back upon itself. This works out the impurities and distributes the carbon content more evenly.

We’re so tempted to fire it out of a cannon and see what happens.
