This throwback Citroen reminds us how far engineers will go for safety

In our world, the more wheels, the better. And if those wheels have helped make today's world a safer place, then they're worth the flashback.

Check out this disco-era Citroen, which has recently resurfaced on the Internets of late in an homage to oddball rides everywhere. On the surface, we love it because it's got 11 wheels and looks like a real-life Hot Wheels car. But it's actually got a more serious purpose: it was built as a 1972 collab between Citroen and Michelin to test truck tires at high speeds.

The multi-wheeled beast, nicknamed the "Citroen Centipede," boasts 700 horsepower and can go up to 110 miles per hour. While the vehicle has 10 visible wheels, it's actually the eleventh wheel hidden inside that counts—a large commercial mid-mounted truck wheel fitted with a test tire. Centipede's weight is jacked up to 10 tons to give it the right test conditions, and the other 10 wheels are just a safeguard to prevent the car from blowing out at top speeds.

Talk about greasing the wheels for safety.
