World’s biggest drone: It’s not the size, but what it can do

Saturday, Dec 19, 2020

Launching objects into space is hard. The amount of energy and infrastructure required for a ground launch is astronomical. But what if there was another way?

That’s where the world’s biggest drone comes in. Called the Ravn X, it can fly high enough to drop a rocket midair that sends small satellites into low-orbit Earth without a pilot or a launchpad. The U.S. Air Force contracted Ravn X’s creator, Alabama-based startup Aevum, to launch its new mission to fly experimental satellites that detect enemy missile launches.

Pretty sleek stuff, right? Ravn X takes off like a regular airplane and can launch satellites into space every three hours, seven days a week. Not that we’re not impressed by its behemoth status. It’s the world’s largest drone by mass, tipping the scales at almost 28 tons.

You don’t need rocket science to know this is one impressive drone.
