Take this custom trailer we designed for the country’s largest manufacturer of paving equipment. Did it involve a lot of requirements and precision steering? Yes, it did. Did it take almost a year in the making? Yes, it did. But that’s because there was a lot of back and forth with the customer and we wanted to get it just right. Were they happy with the final product? We hope so, because they’ve already requested four more versions of it.
The ask: Design a cart that can be used to assemble, haul and even repair a large paving machine. There was definitely room for improvement with the old system. The customer had been using jack stands to mount the machine on top of a cart with zero steering capabilities. It was difficult to maneuver. No bueno.
Thanks to our new solution, the customer can now use this cart to build their paving machines from scratch—through every stage in the assembly line—and then the machines throughout the facility, including up a nearly 5-degree ramp. The new design features reversible steering, meets clearance restrictions and provides workers with proper access to build and service the machine (bonus: check out the mount at the end so workers can comfortably sit while building and repairing the machine). There’s also a special hole for the steering pin to lock the load in place during assembly and transit, as well as an "I" beam to accommodate the machine’s wheels.
