This concept car is a James Bond villain on wheels

Shapeshifting is something we only usually expect to see in an upcoming Marvel movie. Audi, however, has other ideas. Its latest concept car, Skysphere, can physically transform between “sports” and “GT” modes—while looking hyper cool, to boot.

Big and imposing by design, the Skysphere is one wild electric roadster—in theory, anyway. You choose the experience. Thanks to a series of actuators on the front axle, the wheelbase can shrink from about 10 inches, transform into sports mode, and accelerate from 0 to 60 in approximately four seconds. In Grand Touring mode, the car expands 10 inches longer while the car drives itself. After the steering wheel and pedals fold away, the car basically transforms into one spacious and relaxing living room. All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Since the car’s electric—powered by a motor behind the seats—there’s not much under the hood to interfere with the experience. Rear-wheel steering ensures the car remains extremely stable despite its prodigious dimensions.

Part of Audi’s plan to offer only electric cars by 2033, the Skysphere is the first of three upcoming new concept cars in the same family, all of which offer autonomous driving. It’s also pretty sweet-looking. With black tinted windows, Coke bottle fenders and a grill that lights up in a beautifully choreographed ballet, this is sleek styling at its finest. But the level of German engineering is almost too much.

Good to know for when we need inspiration for our next custom trailer
