Get a lift from the world’s longest outdoor escalator

Blink, and you’ll miss most escalators.

This one dares you not to.

At first glance, it feels like a novelty—something built for selfies, views and viral headlines. Maybe even Bigfoot’s personal water slide.

But underneath is something far more serious: a system designed to move people continuously, reliably and at scale in an unforgiving outdoor environment.

This 3,000-foot structure in China’s Wushan County is actually the world's longest outdoor escalator. And it means business.

Nicknamed the “Goddess” escalator, this massive system opened February 17 and climbs roughly 800 feet through one of China’s most rugged landscapes. It’s not a single escalator—it’s a coordinated network: 21 escalators, eight elevators, and four moving walkways working in sync. What used to be a steep, hour-long climb now takes about 20 minutes, end to end.

And the view doesn’t hurt, either. Glass panels frame sweeping mountain scenery, turning the ride itself into part of the attraction. It’s a clever reversal: the journey isn’t something to endure anymore—it’s something people show up for.

But none of this came easy.

Wushan’s terrain is famously vertical, with buildings layered into the mountainside. That same geography made the project possible, and incredibly complex. Engineers followed the natural contours of the land, piecing together sections like a three-dimensional puzzle.

Some stretches approached a 60% slope, requiring elevated corridors and creative structural solutions to maintain stability and alignment.

This wasn’t an overnight build, either. The concept dates back more than 20 years, with serious development only taking shape recently. By opening day, the project had reportedly cost around $23 million and required integrating seamlessly into existing roads, buildings and the mountain itself.

Talk about infrastructure as tourist destination.
