Even hamsters know wheels are a good idea

There are very few things that humans and hamsters can agree on.

Housing preferences? Different.

Diet? Hopefully different.

Personal hygiene routines? Let's move on.

But there is one area where we're perfectly aligned: wheels rule.

For years, scientists assumed hamsters ran on exercise wheels because captivity made them bored, stressed or restless. The wheel was often viewed as a furry version of pacing around a prison yard. But recent research suggests something much more interesting: hamsters appear to run on wheels because they genuinely enjoy it. Scientists have even documented wild animals—including mice and other small creatures—using exercise wheels placed outdoors with no rewards attached. In other words, wheel-running isn't just a captive behavior. Animals seem to choose it.

That's a surprisingly powerful endorsement of one of humanity's greatest inventions.

Think about it. Nature has produced claws, wings, fins, venom, echolocation, camouflage, and approximately 8.7 million species. Yet somewhere along the way, a hamster encountered a spinning wheel and apparently decided, "Yes. This is excellent."

Researchers aren't entirely sure why wheels are so appealing. Some evidence suggests wheel running is self-rewarding, producing dopamine effects similar to the famous "runner's high." Others believe it satisfies natural instincts for movement, exploration and exercise. Whatever the reason, hamsters don't appear to view the wheel as punishment. They see it as enrichment.

Honestly, can you blame them?

At Hamilton, we've spent more than a century thinking about wheels. Bigger wheels. Stronger wheels. Wheels capable of moving thousands of pounds through factories, warehouses, aerospace facilities and countless other demanding environments.

Good wheels create possibilities. Great wheels make movement feel effortless. Which brings us back to our tiny, furry engineering consultant. After more than 100 years in the wheel business, we can confidently say the little guy is onto something.

Because when it comes to getting from here to there, wheels rule.
