Everything’s bigger in Texas—including the explosions

There are science labs. There are big science labs. And then there’s this lab built around a nearly 500-foot steel tube designed to handle explosions traveling at five times the speed of sound.

Naturally, it’s in Texas.

Texas A&M University recently opened the Detonation Research Test Facility, the world's largest academic lab for controlled explosions. Stretching nearly two football fields across the university’s RELLIS campus, the steel-and-concrete behemoth gives researchers something they’ve never had at this scale: a front-row seat to the split-second physics of a detonation.

The setup sounds like something Wile E. Coyote would order from an industrial catalog.

Researchers fill a GIANT tube with a methane-air mixture, ignite it and watch the blast race through a series of obstacles. Thick steel walls help contain the force, while an enormous muffler cuts the sound from roughly 220 decibels to about 120. In laymen’s terms, this is like going from a “cataclysm” to something closer to “very loud rock concert.”

But the goal isn’t just to make a bigger boom.

Scientists want to better understand how a normal flame can suddenly turn into a violent detonation. That knowledge could help improve safety in chemical plants, pipelines fuel systems and other places where combustible materials are part of the job. The facility could also help researchers develop faster aircraft and spacecraft. One area of interest is hypersonic flight, which generally means traveling at more than five times the speed of sound. (Mach 5).

And because this project apparently wasn’t ambitious enough already, the research may even help scientists understand supernovae—the massive explosions that happen when certain stars die. It could also lead to advances in aerospace materials and other substances created under extreme heat and pressure.

In other words, this isn’t just a giant tube built for giant explosions. It’s a giant engineering project designed to answer some giant questions.
