How these rail carts are helping unlock the secrets to the universe

Nearly a mile underground, scientists are chasing some of the universe’s biggest questions. Hamilton's job? Supplying support rail carts designed to haul steel beams.

At first glance, the XT3763 Support Rail Cart doesn't look like much more than four steel wheels and a thick black tube. In reality, it's a purpose-built piece of engineering designed to support and transport massive steel beams in demanding rail applications. Hamilton supplied these carts for use during construction activities at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, where scientists and engineers are building the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment(DUNE), an international project focused on answering some of physics' biggest questions.

Despite the name, this isn't a traditional rail cart with a flat deck. It's more like a rolling beam support. Working in teams, the carts are designed to support and transport large steel beams while providing stability and load protection throughout the process. Each cart is rated to carry up to 17,000 lbs.

Like many great engineering solutions, the design is deceptively simple. Instead of supporting each beam on a flat surface, the cart uses a large rubber-coated tube. The beam rests directly on the tube, which naturally centers the load, protects the steel from damage, and provides the grip needed to prevent slipping during transport.

The tube’s main advantage is its ability to support beams resting at different angles, helping keep the carts stable regardless of the beam’s orientation. It's an elegant solution that protects the load while providing the stability needed to safely transport exceptionally heavy loads in demanding industrial environments.

Of course, building nearly a mile underground presents challenges beyond the load itself. Dirt, moisture, and constant use are part of daily life, so the carts are equipped with sealed bearings to keep contaminants out and performance in. Combined with heavy welded steel construction and a durable industrial finish, they're engineered to deliver dependable performance in an environment where reliability isn't optional.

How these carts move steel is impressive. The project they're supporting is extraordinary.

When complete, DUNE will house the world's largest neutrino detector. A collaboration of over 1,500 scientists and engineers from around the world led by Scientists at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois will fire a beam of neutrinos 800 miles through the Earth to the detector in South Dakota, where researchers hope to better understand why the universe is made of matter, observe neutrinos from exploding stars and uncover new physics beyond what we know today.

The irony isn’t lost on us. The DUNE scientists hope to study neutrino behavior as they pass through the Earth effortlessly. The rail carts supplied for the project don't have that luxury. They have to navigate every obstacle with precision, stability and carefully engineered design.

After all, even the biggest scientific breakthroughs need something solid to stand on.
