Most brakes wait for you to do something. This one waits for you to stop doing something.

Hamilton recently designed this heavy-duty warehouse cart that can carry up to 1,000 pounds of packaged automotive parts and totes. It’s all steel, measures 48 by 60 inches, rides on six wheels and moves at walking speed across warehouse floors.

Useful, yes. But the interesting part is what happens when the person pushing it lets go.

The cart stops itself.

It uses what’s commonly called a deadman brake. To move the cart, the operator squeezes and holds a lever built into the push handle, which releases the brake. Let go, and the brake automatically re-engages. So if the operator trips, loses grip, steps away or simply stops pushing, the cart’s default setting is not “keep rolling.”

It stops.

That matters when the cart can be carrying half a ton. The idea sounds simple. The engineering wasn’t. As Hamilton Truck & Caster Designer Jevon Lambright explained, the challenge was getting the entire brake system to work smoothly and reliably as one. Squeezing the handle sets a series of mechanical components in motion to release the brake. Letting go reverses the process immediately, using spring force to drive the brake back into place with enough speed and force to stop the cart.

The brake might get the attention, but the running gear is doing plenty too. The cart uses a six-wheel tilt design, with two larger 12-inch Ergo-Glide wheels in the center and four 8-inch Ergo-Glide wheels on swivel casters at the ends. The center wheels carry much of the load, while the swivels provide stability and steering. Because the cart can rock slightly onto one end or the other, it stays surprisingly maneuverable for a steel platform this size.

That combination of easy rolling, controlled steering and automatic braking is the whole point. Hamilton engineered the cart to make a heavy load easier to move when you want it moving—and much harder to move when you don’t.

Sometimes the smartest safety feature is the one that assumes doing nothing should stop everything.
