Procrastinate. Sell More Casters, Carts and Trailers

Monday, Mar 24, 2014

Your whole life you’ve been told not to put things off. Respond to that email now. Call this person ASAP. Take out the trash right this second.

But it turns out, procrastination might not be so bad. In fact, it might actually help you sell more casters, carts and trailers.

According to a journal article in The Psychologist, procrastination is a side effect of trying to do too much in an unrealistic time frame. We don’t intentionally delay certain tasks, but it happens because we’re overloaded.

Author Anna Abramowski calls it passive procrastination.

“Passive procrastinators feel pressured and have doubts regarding their ability to achieve, which provokes feelings of guilt, depression which, in turn, increases the possibility of failure,” she writes.

The Right Way to Procrastinate

Instead of being forced to push tasks off, delegate them with active procrastination.

Prioritize your day with the sales calls you absolutely must make. Finish the PowerPoint presentation. Check email when you’re done. And set aside lesser tasks – like organizing your desk or cold calling the guy in Alaska who hasn’t surfaced since the Palin campaign – for another day.

The higher productivity you’ll gain from active procrastination leads to less stress, a positive work environment, and, of course, more opportunities to sell more Hamilton.

So there you have it. Scientific proof that it’s OK to procrastinate. Just don’t tell your wife you heard it from us.
