A custom trailer so big it required a crane upgrade

Thursday, Feb 26, 2026

Some projects are heavy. Some are important. And some are so big you have to upgrade your crane just to flip them over.

This was one of those projects.

Recently, Hamilton built a custom industrial trailer for a major government submarine manufacturer—the kind that produces some of the most advanced subs in the world, including nuclear-class vessels. We can’t say the name (top-secret and all that), but let’s just say they operate in a world where massive is baseline.

The trailer itself? Also not small.

We’re talking a 144-inch-wide by 450-inch-long frame—that’s roughly 12 feet wide and nearly 38 feet long. Capacity? A cool 100,000 pounds. We can’t tell you exactly what it moves—again, we enjoy our security clearances—but we can safely assume it will serve as a support vehicle in the manufacturing process.

What we can tell you is that a trailer as massive as this demands seriously massive Hamilton wheels. If you caught last month's feature, you’ll remember the largest wheel we ever machined completely in-house—a 28-inch diameter by 16-inch face press-on monster. That monster has officially found its home on this trailer.

Of course, building something this big came with its own plot twists.

When we accepted the order, we planned to use a heavier-capacity crane that Hamilton had already purchased but hadn’t yet installed—part of our ongoing investment in expanding our Big Trailer production bay. Then the approval timeline stretched longer than expected. Normally, delays are frustrating. This time it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

The extra time allowed us to get the new crane fully installed before we reached the “okay, now flip it” stage of production. Flipping a structure nearly 38 feet long and weighing around 30,000 pounds is not a casual afternoon activity. It’s choreography. It’s math. It’s trust in equipment that’s built to handle the moment. Let’s just say it was a lift to remember.

Just like the trailer itself. Because when your customer builds submarines the size of skyscrapers lying sideways, your trailer can’t think small.

And at Hamilton, thinking small has never carried much weight.
